Memorial Service for Thomas Klein
Thomas A. Klein “Opa”
Thomas Alan Klein, 81, of Raleigh, NC, passed away on June 26, 2026. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 7, 1944, and was the son of the late John Richard Klein and Elinor Pederson Klein.
Tom enlisted in the United States Army in 1962, serving honorably until his discharge in 1965. During his service, he traveled across the country and was stationed in Korea, working with radar systems.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Carol McGinn Klein, on July 16, 1966, after meeting at the age of 13. Their love has been an inspiration to all who know them, and this year would have marked their 60th wedding anniversary.
Tom and Carol’s journey took them from New York to Montreal, Las Vegas, and then to Tennessee, where they raised their three sons. In 1985, the family settled in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he spent the rest of his years. He retired from Alcatel in 1999.
In retirement, Tom found purpose in giving back, volunteering alongside his friend John Ayers with Habitat for Humanity and faithfully serving as an usher at his Lutheran church for many years.
A diehard New York Mets fan, Tom never missed a game. When he wasn't cheering for the Mets, he enjoyed fishing, traveling, supporting the Wolfpack, or trying his luck at the casino.
Above all, Tom was known as Opa. This cherished title extended beyond his grandchildren to every child fortunate enough to know him. He was known for picking anyone up from the airport, cheering you on from the stands, and being the keeper of the rock garden.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Christine Baxter of Fishkill, New York. He is survived by his wife, Carol McGinn Klein; sons Thomas A. Klein Jr. (Kimberly) of Rifle, CO, Scott N. Klein (Karen) of Raleigh, NC, and Douglas M. Klein (Kate) of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren Thomas A. Klein III, Julian G. Klein, and Lana S. Klein; brother John R. Klein Jr. of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A celebration of life will be held July 25, 2026, 2:00 PM at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27615. Guests are encouraged to wear NY Mets attire or colors.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in his honor.
