Stephen Henry Begley
Stephen Henry Begley, 77, of Raleigh North Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025. Born on April 30, 1948, in New London, Connecticut, Stephen lived a life marked by service, compassion, and an unwavering devotion to his family and community.
Stephen proudly served 21 years in the United States Army (RET. CW3,) including time in Delta Force (JSOC), and was deeply respected for his dedication and bravery. His military career was distinguished with numerous honors, including the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and most honorably, the Legion of Merit.
While serving in the military, Stephen pursued and completed his higher education. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma and went on to complete his Master of Science through the U.S. Air Force Physician Assistant Program at Duke University. Following his studies, he dedicated over 40 years to serving patients as a Physician Assistant, earning PA of the Year in Europe in 1984. His patients and colleagues remember him not only for his skill and professionalism but also for his humor, warmth, and ability to make everyone feel at ease.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Stephen was adored by all who knew him, his quick wit, big heart, and steadfast loyalty left an impression that will not be forgotten.
Stephen had a deep love for animals and cherished visiting local animal shelters with his granddaughters. His compassion extended to his faith community, where he volunteered at Saint Raphael’s Catholic Church for over 30 years. He also found great joy in gardening and cooking, sharing these passions generously with family and friends. Stephen’s warmth, kindness, and dedication will live on in the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Stephen is survived by his devoted wife, Ramonita Begley; his daughter, Stephanie (Nathaniel) Borrelli, his sons, Stephen Begley Jr (Melinda), Albert Begley, Jaysen (Maria) Clements, and Joel (Cindy) Sotomayor; his brothers, Carl (Jennifer) Begley and John Begley; his sister, Jeannie (Robert) Colon; and his beloved grandchildren, Leila Sotomayor, Jocelyn Sotomayor, Emilia Begley, Pia Borrelli, Jaysen Clements, Jaycob Clements, Jaydrian Clements, Mikaela Clements, Jaymie Clements, and Jayvree Clements.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marian Bonamarte; his father, Emery Begley; and his stepmother, Frances Begley.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Renaissance Funeral Home. A funeral service with military honors will take place on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Raphael’s Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the UNC Chapel Hill Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit or Saint Raphael’s Catholic Church.

Steve had such a special place in the heart of our family. My mother, Brenda Errico, worked with him as an RN for years at Tremont Medical Center. I (Christy) have so many memories of him growing up, and felt so special anytime I was sick with his special care. He was very dear for our family and I remember many moments, his smile and laugh, and getting to know his family over the years at different Tremont gatherings. We all send our love and prayers and condolences for the loss of such a special man for a life well lived - with love and dedication. All our love, The Errico Family.

My family knew and was cared for Stephen from his earliest days at Tremont Medical Center. Countless times not only medical advice but life advice too. Checking in when my mom was sick to taking care of my own kids.. he was a reassuring figure in the medical field. My heart and prayers go out to his family. He will be deeply missed.
