Not your typical obituary…not your typical human.
The many voices of Rebecca “Becky” Lofland live on in our memories of her. If you knew her, you would know exactly what I mean. Although she passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on May 19th, 2025, she has left an indelible impression on so many friends, family, clients, neighbors, classmates, fellow artists, and thousands of audience members across the country.
From her early counseling days to her stand-up comedy routines in Chicago, to the birth of her puppet, Androgeena, there is hardly any genre she hasn’t dipped her toe in. She played the banjo, dulcimer, harp, and more. She could carry a tune perfectly, no matter what age she was pretending to be while singing it. Becky was a brilliant writer. She wrote and performed all of Androgeena’s songs. She wrote the scripts for Androgeena’s TV show and much of her earlier show, Frog Hollow.
“The Androgeena Show was a half-hour children’s program revolving around the adventures of the puppet Androgeena and her friend Sammy Lou. This locally produced program entertains children, ages 5 to 9. Although entertaining, the show includes social and educational themes, such as self-esteem, sibling rivalry, recycling, ethnic differences, starting school and more. Becky’s creativity spilled (literally) into her studios in Chicago, Durham, and ultimately in our home, where she continued to create regularly. She was a painter, a sketcher, a sculptor, and what do you call someone who creates beautiful scenes in storefront windows? (She did that too.)
Becky loved the puzzle of home organizing and was talented in staging a room, which, by the way, she probably honed that skill while working on multiple movie sets. “Rebecca Lofland is known for Independent Lens (1999) and February One: The Story of the Greensboro Four (2003). Back to Androgeena for a minute, she visited hospital waiting rooms at Duke, UNC, and WakeMed, just to bring a little cheerful distraction to families. Other Live performances: (national), radio, television, video, schools, libraries, festivals, companies, prisons, telethons. She delivered “Puppet-Grams,” singing or writing poems to honor the recipient.
Rebecca spent many years up to and including her last day on this earth counseling, comforting, and helping those around her to see their value, their strength, and their worth. I witnessed her ministering to the medical staff in the hospital (as a patient) this year. She believed that was why she was here. No matter how much I say here, there’s just no fitting that genie back in the bottle.
When these “notices” say that one is “survived by”, I have no doubt she would have found the humor in the wordplay. She’d probably agree that we didn’t just survive – we endured, thrived, just as she always did. Not so ironically, right now, survival is what we are learning to navigate, and I believe she helped many of us develop coping tools for exactly this.
She had a very quick wit and a hearty, engaging laugh, much like that of her brother Joe Martin (Kim), sisters Lecia Winn and Della Rodgers. Her Mom, Genelle Berry (who preceded her in death), most definitely created that gene because she, too, had a laugh that was impossible to ignore.
Alexander Legere, Gabe Legere, Fergie, and I were privileged to call Becky family. She and I met at a coffee shop, and 19 years later, we’re still laughing. So yes, we are survivors, and very grateful ones. We are brokenhearted, but if we just look within, as she modeled for us, we’ll find what we need to carry on. Sleep in heavenly peace, my love. We are missing you like crazy. Hey, was that you ringing the wind chimes when there was no wind? I have a bit left to do, but I’ll see you again when the time is right.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, PLEASE NOTE: The family will be planting a tree in Becky's memory at her home. To assist with this, please consider making a cash donation to be placed on the “memorial money tree” in the lobby of the funeral home.
A Memorial Service will be held on June 28, 2025 at Renaissance Funeral Home Raleigh, NC beginning at 2:00 p.m. Guests are welcome to remain after the service to offer hugs and support to the family.

I Met Becky in a Women's club in Raleigh. She came in dressed in her Nun outfit; put a little chair on the counter and sat Androgena in it. I excused myself from my companion because I knew this was somebody I needed to know. Know indeed! She was one of the rare friends one only meets once in a lifetime. My love and respect for her is endless. Our souls will meet again in the not too distant future and we will once again dance to the music of love.

Dara and Family, I am so sorry to hear of Becky's passing I first met her many decades ago through my sister Amy, when she first moved down to the triangle area. It was always a delight to be in her presence. Her creativity knew no bounds. In addition to many Androgena memories are memories of the stories she made up about her memories of times spent with our grandmother Ila. She always kept us in stitches! Whenever there was a family gathering, everyone always asked "Is Becky coming, and is she bringing Androgena?" But beyond her creativity . . . What a kind heart, what a good soul. Always giving to others. She will be missed on this earth, but I know that her spirit carries on. Jimmy Pierce

Becky was the creative genius behind The Androgena Show and Frog Hollow, two early-childhood programs on local television in Raleigh NC. She physically created the actual marionettes used, voiced Androgena, her never-seen mother, and many of the other puppet characters. She was endlessly creative and found beauty in a wild variety of objects and humans. Dara, Becky was a one of a kind pure soul. I felt loved and at peace simply by being around her. I hope that the many precious memories that you and the boys have with Becky will help you through the weeks and months to come. Please let me know if there's anything that you need or want.
