Mitchell Roy Brickman

Mitchell Roy Brickman, of Raleigh, North Carolina, died on March 7, 2026 after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer and kidney failure. He was 76 years old.

Mitch was born in Alhambra (a suburb of Los Angeles), California on July 11, 1949, to parents Rosalyn and Irving Brickman. The family moved to the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles where he attended high school and Pierce Junior College. He finished up his Bachelors in Business at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity. After 5 years with Los Angeles County as a Weights and Measures Inspector, he secured a position with Kemper Insurance as a Field Auditor. In 1987, Kemper promoted Mitch to a management role in Syracuse, NY where the family lived for almost 35 years. Mitch and his wife retired to Raleigh in 2022 to live close to their son’s family.

Mitch was an avid reader and well versed in classical music. Photography was an early passion, taking classes in Zone Photography with Al Weber, an Ansel Adams protégé’. Another passion was cars in general, with a special interest in Formula 1 racing. He also enjoyed following his favorite sports teams in Los Angeles and Syracuse, especially Syracuse University Lacrosse.

He volunteered as an Assistant Boy Scout Leader, Assistant Little League Coach and worked for local political campaigns in Syracuse and Raleigh. In later years, he volunteered at the Central NY Food Bank, the Liverpool (NY) Library, Beaver Lake Nature Center (Baldwinsville, NY), the NY State Green Building Conference, GreeningUSA and the Leesville Library in Raleigh. Mitch enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, downhill skiing and traveling.

Mitch will be remembered for his terrific laugh, quick wit and unending curiosity. He had a real passion for travel to historic places as well as natural wonders, traveling extensively throughout the Americas, Europe and Australia.

Surviving members of Mitch’s family include his wife, Diane, son Jared, daughter-in-law Sarah, grandson Wesley, sister Brauna and brother Brian. Preceding him in death was his brother Allen.

Mitch volunteered at Leesville Community Library, where I am the manager. I absolutely loved having him here at the library - his sense of humor and love of life were palpable. We will miss him so very much. I'll never forget running into him at a concert at the NCMA, either! My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.

Michael Zamloch

I'm Michael Zamloch and I have been Mitch's friend since we met at Northern Arizona University in 1969. I'll never know what caused him to knock on my dormitory door and say "Hi I'm Mitch" but I'm incredibly grateful that he did. We explored all over Northern Arizona in his VW Bus. I was amazed by his easy way with people we would meet. Being socially awkward myself, I've learned so much just by watching Mitch. His outgoing engagement with people and his sense of humor made people comfortable around him and created a true friendship between us. A friendship that's lasted 57 years even when separated by distance. At NAU I followed Mitch into the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and, later in Los Angeles, the LA Department of Weights and Measures. We worked together in the Scale Division and played Kismet in the park. I will be forever grateful for Mitch's friendship and presence. Although he rode on ahead I feel sure that I will see him again just as I feel that he resides now somewhere inside me. See ya Mitch!
