Marjorie (Margie) Alfrey Godfrey, 92, of Raleigh NC passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in the early morning of April 7, 2026.

Margie was born in Rockford, IL on May 4th, 1933, the eldest daughter of Harry Raymond and Ruby May (nee Ellwanger) Alfrey. Later became the older sister to Linda.

Marjorie Ann Alfrey met the love of her life Richard (Dick) Godfrey in freshman year Spanish class while attending Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, IL. After graduation, the couple married on June 18th, 1955, in Rockford, IL and moved to Quantico, VA where Dick began his service in the US Marine Corps. The Corps took Dick and Margie to the West Coast, and after Dick’s discharge, the couple moved to Los Angeles where Margie worked in Personnel (Human Resources) for The Rand Corporation. Margie loved her time in Los Angeles and began her life-long love affair with the LA Dodgers. Thousands of hours listening to Vin Scully, all of Sandy Koufax and Clayton Kershaw pitches. Margie could dazzle you with LA Dodgers’ trivia, history, and statistics. Many tears flowed when the Dodgers won the 2024 & 2025 World Series.

Margie and Dick travelled the world, taking every opportunity to experience new people, places and cultures. Whether on safari in Africa, cruising the Sea of Japan, or taking High Tea in The Cotswolds, Margie was game for it all.

An avid and fierce bridge player, Margie will always be missed when the cards are dealt. Margie authored many bridge columns for local newspapers around the country, ran Marathon Bridge series, year after year, and would replay hands in review to always improve.

Margie will also be remembered for her love and devotion to animals that extended beyond her beloved household cats and dogs. She supported animal charities for abused and neglected pets as well as wildlife protection and preservation.

Margie enjoyed family and friends, art and traveling, painting and writing. She supported women’s rights and co-authored the book “Everything a Woman Needs to Know to Get Paid What She’s Worth” published in 1972.

She was fiery and fabulous, fun-loving and free-spirited. We will forever cherish the many memories made together.

Margie is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years Richard Godfrey and survived by her sister Linda (Larry) Puckett of Rockford, IL, and niece Tracy Nunez of Bloomington, IL

At Margie’s request, there will not be a memorial service, instead please go for a walk outside with someone you love. In remembrance, memorial gifts can be made to the SPCA of Wake County or World Wildlife Fund.
