Marjorie "Marge" Ruth Amell Evans
Marjorie “Marge” Ruth Amell Evans, 91, died October 1, 2026, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born in Kenmore, New York, Marge was the devoted wife of Anthony “Tony” Evans for nearly 69 years. She loved him dearly, and the two were always together, whether traveling with friends and family or opening their home for family gatherings and neighborhood get-togethers.
Family was always Marge’s first priority. She and Tony raised six children born over twelve years, and their family grew to 41 people. She loved children all her life and was always excited to see her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Raising a family of eight when times could be tight, she was a shrewd manager of a household, a great cook, a sympathetic ear, and an encourager, always quick to laugh and enjoy her family.
Marge earned her nursing degree from the Millard Fillmore Hospital School of Nursing in 1956 and spent nearly 30 years as a registered nurse in obstetrics, at Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, Genesee Hospital in Rochester, and WakeMed in Raleigh. Over her career she cared for more than 10,000 mothers and their babies. After retiring from nursing, she continued serving children as a teacher’s assistant at Wakefield Elementary School for many years.
Marge was preceded in death by her parents, Basil and Elva Amell; her sister, Jeanette; and her brother, Dick. She is survived by her husband, Tony; her brothers, Bud and Foster (Sherry); her children and their spouses, Patty (Steve) Spencer, David (Annmarie) Evans, Daniel (Sandra Jean) Evans, Michael (Cathy) Evans, Christopher (Cathy) Evans, and Julie (Melanie) Evans-Nolet; her grandchildren, Laura (James) Hanley, Nick Evans, Anthony (Sam) Evans, Maria (Justin) Winn, Alan (Carrie) Evans, Rachel (Colin) Tangerlini, Rebecca Evans and her partner Daniel Spiller, Andrew Evans (Morgan Sanchez), Emma Evans-Nolet, and Asher Evans-Nolet; and her great-grandchildren, Bruce, Alia, Liam, Taylor, Cameron, Eli, Charlotte, Sophie, and Johnny.
The family is grateful to Ayanna and Denise, and the other caregivers at Select Senior Care who looked after Marge with great kindness as her health declined, and to Transitions LifeCare for their service in her final days.
A Memorial Mass will be held for Marge at 1:00pm on October 28th at St. Francis Catholic Church, 11401 Leesville Rd, Raleigh, NC 27613.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Wake Tech Foundation in memory of Marge Evans. Contributions will support the Smith Nursing Endowment, providing scholarship assistance to future generations of nursing students.
