Lata B. Shetty

IN LOVING MEMORY OF SMT. LATA B. SHETTY
March 4, 1948 – January 7, 2026

"The soul is neither born, and nor does it die." — Bhagavad Gita

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lata B. Shetty, who attained Sadgati on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

Born in Mumbai, India, on March 4, 1948, Lata brought warmth and wisdom to everyone she met. She remained active as a Teacher Assistant even in her retirement, touching many young lives. Her spirit of service extended far beyond the classroom. In New York, she devoted her free time to making blankets for injured veterans, and in North Carolina, she was actively involved in the Comfort Heart movement, knitting hearts for premature babies and their parents. Her dedicated service included numerous other charitable endeavors in both New York and North Carolina.

In her final act of compassion, she gave the gift of life as an organ donor to help others.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Bhaskar H. Shetty; her loving children Sanjay and Nitin (and daughter-in-law Arathi); her doting grandchildren Neeya, Aanya, and Dhilan; and her cherished brothers Sudarashan and Balachandra.

Please join us to pray for the departed soul.

What makes Ms. Lata such an inspiring woman to me is the fact that she never stopped giving back. She was a resilient woman, but also a compassionate one. She really put her 100% for others, this including the children that were under her care. I was fortunate enough to cross paths with her and build a whole garden of memories in the six years we've worked together in school; and now those memories will forever live in my heart. Ms. Lata, even in the wake of your passing I hope you know that you are so loved and that you continue to be an inspiration for me. Naomi.

My words will not be adequate to express my sorrow at the sudden demise of Lata mami. It was only after Uday and me informed thidi about our plan to visit them last year that I experienced her intense love for us. Her enthusiasm in planning our stay, special meals for me, shopping outings, driving us around amazed me. Her talent in cooking, baking, knitting, her love for gardening, her attachment to her school and her social work commitments.the list is long.... she truly believed in living life fully! Prayers to the Lord to give strength to the family she cherished and cared for lovingly and to the lives she touched. Prayers that her soul stays blessed by the Lord!

There are no words to truly express the loss we feel today. Lata Aunty was a motherly figure to so many whose lives she touched. Her warmth, kindness, and loving heart will always be remembered and deeply missed. Aunty poured her energy into serving her community and helping others through her selfless work. My family has had the joy of sharing countless meals cooked with her love and savoring the delicious sweets she so kindly prepared during every Diwali season. Aunty was an integral part of our community and served selflessly at every event the Tulu community hosted — cooking, cleaning, decorating, and lending a hand wherever needed. Along with her family, she inaugurated the very first Tuluver community stage event, Gouji, a moment that we all cherish and will remember forever. Her generosity extended far beyond her community involvement. When our family had just moved from Wisconsin and lived nearby for a few months, we experienced her compassion firsthand. Our hot water tank had broken, and with two little ones, we were struggling. My wife hesitated to ask for help, but when she called Aunty, her response was immediate and full of care. Despite having guests at home, she said, "If I told you I had guests, you wouldn't have come — the children need a warm bath in this cold weather." That moment perfectly captured who she was — selfless, compassionate, and always ready to help. Aunty, along with your beloved family, you embraced all of us as your own. Your love and warmth created bonds that will last forever. We will miss you deeply and remember you always. Our heartfelt prayers for your Sadgati and eternal peace. Om Shanthi 🙏🏼
