Krzysztof (Krzyś) Szall

Krzysztof Szall passed from this life on September 4, 2026, having faced an illness with bravery and grace. His final days were spent peacefully at his home in Raleigh, North Carolina with his family.

He will be remembered as a deeply thoughtful and content man who paid attention—to details, to how things worked, and especially to his family. He was a loving and dependable presence in the lives of his daughter, Barbara Cooke, her husband Kevin, and in the everyday lives of his cherished grandchildren, Marcus and Nina. He enjoyed living in Raleigh near them in his retirement.

Krzyś was born at home on July 7, 1947, in Niemen, a town named for the river that runs through the region. The area had been part of prewar Poland and was within the Soviet Union at the time of his birth. He was the son of Jadwiga Krawczyk Szall and Stanisław Szall and grew up with his older brother, Włodzimierz. When Krzyś was ten, they left Niemen and settled in Poznań, Poland. He finished high school there and went on to earn a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Politechnika Śląska.

In 1982, Krzyś came to the United States with his wife, Ewa and their daughter, Barbara. New Jersey became home and he worked there as a skilled auto mechanic for many years. He was an expert craftsman who brought equal parts artistry and precision to everything he built, fabricated, repaired or restored. He particularly enjoyed restoring Willys Jeeps and gunsmithing.

Krzyś is survived by his family in Raleigh; brother Włodzimierz and his wife (Roma) in Poland; and nieces and nephews in Poland.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Krzys was really a great guy. He spent a lot of time at our house in Raleigh working on projects with me over the years. We worked on a 1965 Mustang convertible, built a wooden boat, and refurbished a 1965 Airstream, but his favorite thing to tinker with was a 1963 Willys. He always told me he liked working on projects because it kept his mind sharp. He was often pretty critical of the original designer of something mechanical and would revise their design into something he thought was better. And most of the time, it probably was. He would also always refuse food when he was at our house—unless Barb told him otherwise. Then apparently it was okay. More than anything, it was just great having Krzys around—tinkering with something, figuring out how it worked, and usually figuring out how he could make it better. I feel fortunate for all the time we got to spend together. He will be missed.
