Jean Fritz Capps, 80, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Jean was born on September 4, 1945, in Wayne County, North Carolina, to Allen Fritz and Clara May Ivey Fritz. She was raised in Goldsboro, surrounded by a loving extended family, including many Ivey aunts and cousins who remained dear to her throughout her life.

Jean married Bill Capps, and together they shared a devoted and loving marriage until his passing in 2016. In later years, they moved to Raleigh and settled in the Lakemont neighborhood, where Jean helped cultivate a close-knit “neighborhood family” of loyal friends who supported her with love and care until the very end.

Jean attended East Carolina University, earning a degree in education, and was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She began her career as an elementary school teacher before stepping away from the classroom to devote herself fully to raising her two children, Stephanie and Allen. When her children were older, Jean returned to education and completed her career in Raleigh. Throughout her life, she was an active volunteer in her children’s schools and in her church.

Known to friends and family for her intelligence—and for being nearly unbeatable at Trivial Pursuit—Jean possessed a quick wit, a wonderful sense of humor, and a remarkable range of talents. She was an accomplished artist and a classically trained pianist from an early age. Music and art were lifelong passions, and she continued to play the piano and create art throughout her life.

Jean was a faithful and active member of her church communities in both Goldsboro and Raleigh. Her strong faith and deep commitment to service guided her life and relationships. In every way, Jean embodied the grace, kindness, and strength of a true Southern lady.

Jean is survived by her son, Allen; her daughter, Stephanie; her son-in-law, Ben; her granddaughter, Maya; and many beloved family members and friends who will cherish her memory.
