Irwin Rovner
Dr. Irwin Rovner, 84, passed away on September 27, 2025, in Raleigh, NC. A physical anthropologist, US Navy veteran, and avid world traveler, Irwin was a noted raconteur.
Irwin was born to Abraham and Sara Rovner of Hyannisport, MA. Irwin graduated from Brandeis University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A two-time Fulbright Award recipient, he did groundbreaking research into phytoliths, which he used to help reconstruct the gardens at Monticello.
Irwin was preceded in death by his wife, Ann S. Rovner. He is survived by daughters, Dorothea and Abigail and brother, Jack.
There will be a private graveside ceremony at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations to the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro are greatly appreciated. Condolences: rfhr.com

I have fond memories of Irv's encouragement during my M.S. degree entrance into the phytolitharian research world. His scholarly contributions will be cited into the future.

Dr. Rovner was my undergrad advisor. I worked for him too, Binary Analytical. I scraped tarter off of teeth and washed dirt, Pratoria Salt Pan, Hungary, Harpers Ferry among other places. He was a top notch curmudgeon and hilarious. We had a great time transporting vehicles and equipment to the port of Baltimore for shipment to Hungary.
