Douglas Raymond Lee
Douglas Raymond Lee, 74, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
Doug was born on September 8, 1951, in Essex County, New Jersey, to the late Donald Lee and Margaret Twyman Lee. He was raised in Livingston, New Jersey, where he attended St. Philomena's Elementary School and Essex Catholic High School, followed by a brief time at Mount Saint Mary’s College in Maryland.
As a young man, Doug embraced adventure, traveling throughout the country and spending time in Colorado and New Orleans before returning to Livingston, where he maintained deep roots for many years. A jack of many trades, Doug worked primarily as a tree surgeon during those years, operating his own business, Lee's Trees, and later applying his skills in carpentry. With a larger-than-life personality and a gift for connecting with people, he cultivated friendships across generations and throughout the community. He especially treasured the camaraderie of the Merrigan's Tavern softball team and the many friendships that grew from it.
Later in life, Doug relocated to Raleigh, where he worked in food service and, true to his nature, built another circle of lasting friends. Although he lost both of his legs to diabetes in his 60s, Doug faced that challenge with remarkable courage and grace. He maintained a positive outlook and inspired others by offering encouragement and support to those facing hardships of their own.
Doug had a passion for gardening, loved sports, and was a loyal friend to many. Above all, he cherished the special bond he shared with his mother, Peggy, who predeceased him eleven years ago. In recent years, he found happiness and companionship with Laura Germaine, also originally from Livingston, with whom he shared a loving relationship.
Doug is survived by his sister, Susan Marschalk; her children, Kara and Kevin; his brother, Tom Lee; and his brother, Bill Lee, and Bill's wife, Mary, along with their daughters, Maggie and Nora. He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Peggy Lee.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Amputee Foundation (AAF), American Amputee Foundation, Inc. in Doug’s memory.
