David Burgess Howe, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and longtime New Hampshire resident, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 20, 2025, at age 78. David was born on February 28, 1947 in Northampton, Massachusetts to Milton Albert Howe, Jr. and Jean Burgess Howe.

David grew up in Bedford, Massachusetts, and graduated from Bedford High School in 1964. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Beloit College in Wisconsin. He served in the Peace Corps in Malaysia before earning a graduate degree in Physics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. After graduate school, David began his career as an electrical engineer in the aerospace industry.

In 1978 David married Maryann Morris, of Antrim, New Hampshire. Together they raised seven children—Joshua, Peter, Jacob, Samuel, Isaac, Elias, and Avril—who brought him his greatest joy. He will be remembered for his love of nature, his commitment to intellectual honesty, and the delight he found in learning about the world through conversation with those around him.

David was preceded in death by both his parents. He is survived by his sisters, Cynthia Howe (Dan McBride) and Rebecca Howe (David Carpenter); his seven children, Joshua, Peter (Jonna), Jacob, Samuel (May Kou Yang), Isaac (Emile), Elias, and Avril; his ten grandchildren, Jordan, Hannah, Celeste, Lucas, Zachary, Joshua, Gideon, Olivia, Miles, and Wylie; his seven great-grandchildren; and his nieces Sarah McBride-Gagyi, and Rebecca McBride. He also leaves behind many dear friends, including the Morris family and Deborah DePippo of Concord, NH.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Concord, New Hampshire, on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local public radio station.
