With deep love and profound sorrow, we announce the passing of David Arthur Oshoba Stuart, who departed this life peacefully on Monday, June 23, 2025, in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, at the age of 69.
David was born on July 11, 1955, in Freetown, Sierra Leone, to the late Dr. Arthur Stuart and Louie Adetungie Stuart. He was schooled in England at Dulwich College Preparatory School and Isle of Wight. A proud Prince Walean, David continued his studies at Technical Institute and Fourah Bay College in Freetown before earning further qualifications through City and Guilds of London. He later built a fulfilling career as an engineering technician at S&ME in Raleigh, North Carolina.
But David’s truest calling was how he made people feel seen, valued, welcomed, and deeply loved. He lived by a personal creed: “Life is short, so don’t waste time on negativity.” With quiet strength, wit, and his signature warmth, David lit up every space he entered. Since his passing, stories of his kindness and impact have poured in from around the world shared by lifelong friends and even strangers he met in passing. These tributes, spanning continents and decades, are a testament to the sincerity of his relationships and the countless lives he touched.
A lifelong servant leader, David was a dedicated member of the Fuquay-Varina Lions Club for over 15 years, holding multiple leadership roles including President and District Cultural and Community Activities Chairperson. His service earned him Lions Club International’s highest honors: the 2020 Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and the 2015 Sid L. Scruggs III Beacon of Hope Fellowship Award, recognizing his advocacy for visually impaired youth.
In addition to his work with the Lions Club, David was a longtime board member and volunteer for Family and Community Empowerment Services (FACES), a nonprofit supporting families in crisis across Southern Wake County. Through mentorship, emergency assistance, and everyday acts of generosity, David gave his heart fully until his final days.
He was also a beloved member of the Cyclades Club, where he formed lifelong friendships and always made room for laughter. David also served as a trustee of the Melvine Edith Patricia Stuart (MEPS) Well Woman Clinic in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
David was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal brother, and cherished friend. His legacy lives on through his children and in every person who carries a memory of his humor, humility, and generous spirit.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 40 years, Lois; his children, Arthur and Camille; his treasured granddaughter, Valentina; his sister, Gwendoline Mason; his brother-in-law, Henry W. Shyllon and his sisters-in-law, Josephine Byass, Clarice Faulkner (Monty), and Henrietta Badjan; and the Stuart, May, Farquhar, Mason, Parkinson, Beresford-Cole, Conton, Simpson (Ghana), and Shyllon families, along with a host of extended family and lifelong friends across the USA and abroad.
In recognition of his service, the Board of Directors of the Fuquay-Varina Lions Club Foundation, Inc. is proud to announce that the 2025–2026 scholarships will be named the Lion David Stuart Scholarship. These scholarships will be awarded to graduating students from Willow Spring High School and Fuquay-Varina High School, honoring his enduring commitment to education and community.

David, my dear College Chapel family member, I recall our last encounter, almost 3 years ago at the Cheetham-Smart's residence, in Raleigh, NC We reminisced about growing up in our beloved church "College Chapel" Rawdon Street, Freetown, Sierra Leone. We talked at length about the attributes of the late Pa Johnny, caretaker of the church. his talents and well-hidden fine culinary skills.... There was nothing to beat his "Jollof Rice", we both recounted. Having been taken in by your loving, warm and kind parents, at the passing of Mama May, you tenderly recalled how impactful Pa Johnny was in yours and your dear Sister Gwen's lives growing up. With the love, warmth and kindness experienced in your parental household, you, in turn, impacted the lives of your darling wife, Lois, your children, Arthur, Camille, granddaughter, Valentina (though for a short time) relatives, friends and others during your earthly journey. By God's grace they will all do the same as they go through their life's journey. As sad as it is to say goodbye, we give thanks to God for your life on this earth. Your work on this earth is done and He has called you home. I can only imagine the sight of your parents, grandparents, Pa Johnny (in the lead) and all our dearly departed "College Chapel" family members with banners waving to welcome you. My family and I are devastated on the news of the passing of David. He was the best childhood friend of my late brother Karim and his late mother, Aunty Tungie, was a dear friend of my mother. My fondest recollections of David are filled with memories of his enormous sense of humor. He was effortlessly funny, warm and intentionally kind. We had not been in contact for many years, but the mention of his name always brought a smile to us all. Our deepest condolences to Lois, his children, Camille and Arthur and his sister Gwen. We are so thankful that you are no longer in pain. 2 Corinthians 5:8 comforts us by stating, " To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." Blessings.

I was deeply saddened to hear of David's passing. Though we hadn't seen each other in years, we stayed in touch, mainly via WhatsApp. He maintained his great sense of humour right to the end, regularly sending humorous posts and interesting news articles. I will always remember him fondly. My heartfelt condolences to his wife and all his family during this difficult time. May you all find comfort and solace in your memories of him. Oh what sadness it bears on the loss of a father and friend so dear. cherished memories of your jolly and fun filled persona now fills my heart with tears. You shared the ambient platform and high table of life your life with me as though we were old acquaintances. How friendly and humbling it felt. David and I always had an easy natural connection for example even though we hadn't actually spoken for ages though WhatsApp thankfully meant we could connect these last years with jokes etc, in January after our lovely hug at Imodale's funeral we giggled in our usual way about some random thing he and I said when he called me as I was still on the States.
