One of the greatest gifts in life we have is the love of our mother! It is by the grace of God that our mom and grandmom went peacefully to heaven. She has left a legacy in her wake of four children, six grandchildren and many family members and friends that are eternally grateful for the blessings she bestowed with her care, joy and endless love that she gave to us all.

Barbara Joan Hasbrouck Vitek, of Raleigh, North Carolina has gone to be with our Lord and to join our Dad.

Born on October 28, 1936, in Newburgh, New York to William Benjamin and Ethel Marie Hasbrouck, she was the eldest daughter of three children and was lovingly called Dolly by her father. As a child, she recalled fond memories of spending summers with her grandparents and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and worked at a local chocolate shop. She graduated high school in 1954 from Newburgh Free Academy and was a cheerleader, was on the dance team, and had numerus friends that she cherished and continued to be in touch with throughout her lifetime. Her yearbook accolades shared that she was petite, full of fun, classy and was a credit to her senior class. She reminded us all the time of how popular she was and how many friends she enjoyed during her high school years. This was a great memory for her and she was sweet and kind to all. Kindness is what she has passed on to many.

October 7, 1956, Barbara married the love of her life, Edward Peter Vitek and was employed at IBM as an administrative assistant. After their honeymoon to Miami, Florida they began to build a lifetime together and had four children Mark, Greg, Karen and Joanne in Poughkeepsie, New York. In 1967 they embarked on a journey to move their family to Raleigh, North Carolina with IBM. She lovingly set out on an adventure and moved away from all of her family to start a new and exciting life in Raleigh.

Barbara was a busy mom and stayed at home with her children until they were older. Northbrook Club was her salvation as it gave her time to relax with all the wonderful families they became friends with while sharing in summer fun there and down at their home in Atlantic Beach. She was the classic Mom who did it all and was there for everything (baseball, basketball, softball, marching band) for her children and many other events as well. There was nothing that she couldn’t handle as a mom and made it look effortless. Barbara was also an amazing chef for her family and called herself a foodie. She was part Italian, and her lasagna was legendary, as well as many other dishes that she prepared in love. Food to her … was love.

The greatest gifts in life to her were her family. Nothing made her happier than being with her husband, children, grandchildren and extended family having large parties. She absolutely adored her grandchildren and reveled in all of their accomplishments and cheered them on. Barbara and Ed were pioneers when they left New York, and they were the first in their family to come to North Carolina with IBM. Four other families followed suit in the later years, and this brought her great joy.

Barbara worked for IBM until her retirement at the age of 55 and was the very first Executive Assistant in RTP, NC to whom was given the General Managers Award for her dedication to her managers and the care and excellence that she gave to IBM.

Barbara is survived by her sons Mark Vitek (Ellen) and Greg Vitek (Elaine); and daughters Karen Vitek Scarbrough and Joanne Vitek Reeves; grandchildren Lauren Vitek, Anna Louise Vitek Davis (Ian), Jonathan Vitek (Stephen), Michael Vitek, Elizabeth Williams and Caroline Morris; Sister-in-love Judy Vitek Frame and all of our extended family.

A funeral mass service will be held at 1:30pm, Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2718 Overbrook Drive, Raleigh, NC 27608 and a reception will follow at the Fallon Center which is adjacent to the church. The Funeral Mass will be Livestreamed via Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Streaming will begin at 1:30pm.

Our family would like to thank Elizabeth and her team at Phanuel Staffing for their amazing care that they so lovingly gave to our parents and we are truly blessed by the love that you shared with us as well.
