Anna Synowiez Chenery, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on July 2, 2025, at the age of 82. Her life was a shining example of strength, enduring love, and a fierce devotion to those she held dear.

Anna was born on May 6, 1943, in New York, the daughter of Alexander and Agnes Synowiez. In her younger years, her family relocated to Southern Pines, North Carolina. She eventually settled in Raleigh, where she would build her family, raise her children and touch countless lives.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved son, Ted, whose memory she carried with her every day. She is survived by her loving children: Meg and her husband Marccus, Katie and her husband Tommy, Josh and his wife Tiffany and her bonus daughter Sherri Hagymas and Husband Dave. Her heart was fullest when surrounded by her seven grandchildren — Hunter, Sophie, Jake, Jack, Emma, Grace, and Helen — each of whom brought her immeasurable joy and pride. Anna also leaves behind six siblings, Alex, Agnes, Edward, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and many nieces and nephews.

Anna returned to school in her later years to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse (RN). She went on to work at Rex Hospital, where her compassion and gentleness comforted patients; and she developed many special friendships amongst her colleagues. Nursing wasn't just a career for Anna — it was an extension of the care she showed every day to those around her.

Anna was a dedicated member of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh. She also volunteered in several capacities over the years with organizations such as Meals on Wheels and The Open Door Clinic (Urban Ministries of Raleigh).

Anna was also a gifted baker, and her kitchen was often filled with the warmth of fresh baked bread, cakes, cookies, and her famous cinnamon rolls. She shared her love through homemade treats, birthday cakes and more that became traditions, comforting her family, delighting neighbors, and leaving sweet memories. In her free time, she enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, gardening, time with friends and walks with her beloved dogs.

As a devoted mother, Anna was dedicated to her children’s needs, prioritizing them above her own. Her unwavering love, support and guidance was driven by a deep selfless love. She stayed on the run keeping them involved in many activities, especially swim team, and she was always cheering them on, and driving back and forth many early mornings to practices and meets.

Anna was known for her resilience through life’s hard seasons, and her unwavering love for her family, she gave generously of herself. Even in sorrow, she radiated grace, and in challenges, she stood tall.

Her absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but her presence lives on in the stories, strength, and spirit she passed down to her family and all who knew her.

A Funeral Service celebrating Anna’s life will be held in the St. Mary of the Angels Chapel at Saint Francis of Assisi Church, 11401 Leesville Rd, Raleigh, NC 27613, Thursday, July 31, 2025 at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Anna’s memory to Urban Ministries of Raleigh, in honor of her life of service, compassion, and unshakable love.
