Alexander “Xander” Dennis Barnes
Alexander (Xander) Dennis Barnes passed away on Thursday, June 26, at Duke University Hospital Trauma Center due to complications from surgery. He was 22.
Xander was born on January 24, 2003 in New York, to Thomas and Jennifer Barnes and moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, in 2004. Xander grew up in North Raleigh and attended North Ridge Elementary School, West Millbrook Middle School, and Sanderson High School. After high school, he lived the dream of many by enrolling in the Disney College Program and working at Walt Disney World in Florida. Upon completion of the program, he remained an employee of The Mouse at the Liberty Tree Tavern in the Magic Kingdom. He had been residing in Florida these past three years.
Xander loved dancing, specifically tap and hip hop. He was perhaps the “ultimate theatre kid,” working almost every job there is under the marquee from sound and lights to ushering and box office. But it was the stage where he truly shined, appearing in various Cast Camp and Miscast productions at North Raleigh Arts and Creative Theater (NRACT) and winning Best Actor at Sanderson for his titular role in “David and Lisa.” A long-time volunteer at NRACT, he was the first recipient of the Elizabeth Grimes Droessler Volunteer Award. And if you ever were in Xander’s car driving a few miles or through a few states, you almost certainly ended up in a duet with him singing to the radio or a playlist.
A beloved son, grandson, and brother, Xander is survived by his parents; his three siblings, Victoria, Jessica, and Nicholas; his grandmothers Gayle Walters Rolf, Rosemary Byrnes, and Karen Barnes; his Aunt Denise Rolf-Fatigati; various other aunts, uncles, and cousins (SO many Barnes, Sacchitellos, Torrusios, and Walters!); countless friends in North Carolina, Florida, and beyond; and, of course, his precious cat, Cleo. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Thomas Barnes, Sr.; his uncle, Darrin Hines; and his dog, Dixie, and rascally rabbit, Charles.
But, really, no single obituary could adequately sum up how truly special this young man was. Yes, sadly, the life of Xander Barnes will not be marked by academic degrees or a climb up some corporate ladder or a fitting end as an old man surrounded by children and grandchildren huddled around his deathbed. It will be marked by service . . . service to his family, friends, and community. If you are reading this and you knew Xander, he almost certainly helped you at some point somewhere along your way. He was the guy you could count on to drive you to the airport; to bring you medicine; to take your side when no one else would. To quote his sister, Jessica, “Xander would be there in a heartbeat whenever you needed him, bopping along to a playlist the whole way there.”
Xander’s life will also be marked by his devotion to order and cleanliness, something we can all take inspiration from. He would show up early for your party and help you set up, then stay late and help you clean up (if only to recap and “spill the tea”). Even as a young boy, he kept his room clean, his closet organized, and he would have sibling sleepovers where he would push all the beds together so he, Victoria, Bubba, and Jessica could watch movies and be together. His cleaning of NRACT became so legendary that when he was done, staff would declare that the theatre has been “Xanderized.”
But most importantly, Xander’s life will be marked by love. How many of us did he give a hug to when we really needed it? How many times did he offer his pointed, boney shoulders to cry on? If a heart is truly judged not by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others, Xander Barnes danced as only he could through those Pearly Gates last Thursday to the song of angels, the sound of trumpets, and the voice of his Maker saying what we should all want to hear, “Welcome home, good servant, and a job well done.”
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 2nd from 2pm to 5pm at the Renaissance Funeral Home and Crematory in Raleigh. A Celebration of Life service till take place the following day, Thursday, July 3rd at 3pm. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service.
