Alex Karl Kauer, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and man of great faith, passed away peacefully on June 4, at the age of 85. Born on April 23, 1940, in Dortmund, Germany, Alex was the beloved son of Anton and Ottilie Kauer and one of five siblings: Katie, Norbert, Marie-Louise, and Lucy. He was preceded in death by his siblings Katie and Norbert.

In 1953, following the death of his father in 1948, Alex immigrated to the United States at the age of 13. He left behind his mother and siblings, determined to build a new life. With the help of a compassionate nun, he taught himself English while attending Catholic high school in New York. Alex put himself through Manhattan College (working 100 hours a week at a liquor store), earning a degree in electrical engineering.

In 1962, he began what would become a distinguished 35 year career with IBM, where he steadily rose through the ranks—from line manager to Lab Director and ultimately General Manager. He also earned an MBA along the way, further exemplifying his dedication to personal and professional growth.

In 1963, Alex met the love of his life, Catherine Fratini. They were married on September 4, 1965, and shared 53 wonderful years together until Catherine’s passing in 2018. Together, they raised four children and built a home filled with love, faith, and laughter.

Alex’s greatest joys in life were his family and his Catholic faith. He was a man who could fix nearly anything—whether it was building a deck, repairing a car, or constructing a stone wall—he found peace and purpose in hands-on work. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and quiet strength.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine, and his firstborn son, Eric Kauer (Stephanie). He is survived by his children: Paul Kauer (Ericka), Neil Kauer (Jan), and Susan DeBender (Mike); and his cherished grandchildren: Sam Kauer, Jacob Kauer, Phillip Kauer, Emily DeBender, Ava Kauer, Roman Kauer, Dezi Kauer, Alex DeBender, and Liza Kauer.

Alexander’s legacy of love, faith, and perseverance lives on in all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
