W. Dean Best passed away on Feb. 26, 2016 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

He was born on Jan. 22, 1938 in Goldsboro, NC, the son of Cornelius and Wilda Best. After graduation from Goldsboro High School, he attended NCSU and graduated in 1964 with a degree in Architecture from The School of Design. He practiced architecture in Chapel Hill for several years and in 1971 opened an office in Raleigh, Best and Associates, AIA. His architectural achievements included the original mall at Crabtree Valley, Parkwood Mall in Wilson, the original North Ridge Country Club building, other shopping centers, office buildings, apartments and hospitals. In addition, he designed and developed townhouses and condominiums on the NC coast. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the North Carolina Board of Architecture.

He was a man of strong opinions on most subjects. He had a lifetime love of yachting and enjoyed traveling and playing the many famous golf courses around the country. He enjoyed studying and collecting wine and was known for his knowledge of the best restaurant in almost any city in the country. Collecting and studying art was a major interest in retirement.

He is survived by Anne, his wife of 57 years; his son, Matthew Best and wife, Cheri, of Louisville, KY; his daughter, Melissa Best of Raleigh; sister, Lou Carpenter of Raleigh; brother-in-law, William C. Spencer and wife, Mary Rose, of Richmond, VA; 3 step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Donald Best and wife, Shirley of Goldsboro.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of 6A at Wake Med for their wonderful care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dean’s memory to the American Heart Association.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Tues., March 1 at North Ridge Country Club. There will be a private memorial service for the family at a later date.
