Obituary For Andrew Cookson

Andrew Cookson, 49, passed away in his sleep on August 16. He was born on March 30, 1968 in New Brunswick, NJ to Robert and Agnes Cookson.

After graduating from Old Dominion University, Andrew worked as a realtor in the Wilmington area for a number of years. He then relocated to the Triangle area to attend North Carolina Central University law school. Andrew earned his Juris Doctor in 2003 and established the law firm Gurley & Cookson, PLLC in the North Raleigh area. One of Andrew’s greatest joys was assisting people in need and he worked to provide quality, friendly legal services. His firm continues to serve the North Raleigh real estate community under the name Cookson & Cromer, PLLC. Andrew and his wife, Lauren, were happily married for 10 years. Together they enjoyed raising their daughters, traveling, and watching hockey. Andrew was an avid lover of sports particularly, hockey (Go Hurricanes!), baseball (Go Mets!), and golf. One of the highlights of his life was watching the Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup.

Andrew is survived by his wife, Lauren; his daughters, Chloe, Keira, and Lucy and his mother, Agnes Cookson of Virginia Beach, VA; his brothers, Robert Cookson of Humble, TX and Michael Cookson of Bracey VA; his sisters, Clare Lewis of Natick, MA and Ruth Cookson of Norfolk, VA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Andrew was preceded in death by his father, Robert Cookson, his sister, Catharine Cookson, and by his beloved daughter Paisley Cookson.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 4801 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27609, on Saturday, August 19, at 2 PM. The family will be greeting friends and relatives immediately following the service.

Your smile and your kindness that radiated so brilliantly will forever be remembered. You had a way of always making my clients feel taken care of in the best way possible. It was amazing how they never forgot you, but became clients for real estate and other things as well. No matter how small or large the transaction, you were always the same. Thanks for being you. I pray your light will continue to shine brightly in the memories left etched in our hearts and minds. Well done to a good a faithful servant!!! Marion F Gatling

Your smile and generous heart will be missed by many. You could always be counted on to go the extra mile to make a transaction go smoothly and make a group of strangers feel less stressed and more comfortable, and then leave feeling everything turned out just fine. Your low-key demeanor and kind soul will be missed by those of us who worked with you, and got to know you over the years Lin Short

Our community has lost a good, kindhearted and generous man. I so enjoyed working with Andrew over the years and will miss his presence. May we each find peace and comfort as we remember Andrew for the many ways he touched our hearts. He will be deeply missed.

I met Andrew in 1996. He has always been one of the most caring and honorable men that I know. I don't use the word honorable lightly. I saw first hand how he built his law office and cared for each employee, client and all whom he interacted with. My loyalty was and still is with Andrew. I knew that my company could connect clients to him and they would be treated fairly, fought for when necessary and never overcharged. My heart is broken along with many others that you have transitioned so soon. I am so grateful that I know you. I will miss you terribly!
