Andre and our son Francois, met in nursery school. Since then and throughout their school years, they had been the best of friends. In many ways, he was very much part of our family. The friendship continued for years after school, thanks to the internet and social media, and also through regular contact with his parents. We were pleased to hear about Andre earning his degree, getting married and alas, being blessed with a beautiful daughter, born on his birthday. We are heartbroken at the news, and cannot possibly imagine how painful it must be for his parents, dear wife and daughter, friends and family, having to deal with the loss of his passing. We will remember him as the intelligent, sometimes devious little boy that had the face of an angel, the charm of a salesman, and a great big heart of gold. Rest in peace Andre van Schalkwyk. Koekela, Leonie, Jan, Francois & Talia van der Westhuizen (Pretoria, South Africa)

It's hard to put into a few words who Andre was. To me the best way to describe him is that meeting him is like meeting an old school buddy. He was so easy to get along with and make great memories. Some posts here mention he had a heart of gold. I think that explains it perfectly. He was an all-round good guy. One fond memory I have is of the time we spent up at the lake. Pete tried his hardest to fling Andre and myself off the tubes behind the boat but did not succeed. It was a great time and I will cherish all those memories and others I have of Andre. May his family find strength during this difficult time and take some comfort in the knowledge that a part of Andre lives on in the hearts and in the good memories of those who knew him. Although we won't be there for Andre's celebration of life service tomorrow, we will be there in heart. All our love, Sean Nadia and Soren van der Merwe.
