Matthew Ballard Moretz
Matthew Ballard Moretz, 43, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at home on June 14, 2026. Born on January 7, 1983, in Greenville, North Carolina, Matt lived a life marked by strength, compassion, and an unwavering devotion to the people and passions he loved.
Matt was the beloved son of Leonard Moretz and Elizabeth Ahlschier Leff. He is survived by his parents; his step-mother Kathleen Moretz; his step-father Jurek Leff: his brother, Noah Moretz; his stepbrothers, Jeffrey Hoffmann, Gregory (Cassidy) Hoffmann and nephew Hayden Hoffmann; his aunt, Lucy Ahlschier; his uncle, Dr. David (Gail) Moretz; and numerous cousins, extended family members, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Scott and Wilma Moretz and Joe and Connie Ahlschier.
Matt graduated from Hargrave Military Academy, attended Appalachian State University, and earned his degree in Criminal Justice from Cape Fear Community College. He found his calling as a personal fitness trainer, taking great pride in helping his clients achieve their goals and become healthier, stronger versions of themselves.
Athletics were woven throughout Matt’s life. He loved all sports, but wrestling held a special place in his heart. His journey began with the Cary Wrestling Club, continued through Hargrave Military Academy, and evolved into a lifelong passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Matt treasured the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community and found particular joy in teaching young athletes, encouraging them to grow not only in skill but also in confidence, discipline, and character.
Matt was a big man with a big heart—someone you always wanted in your corner. Though he often projected a tough exterior, those who knew him best understood the gentle, caring person beneath it. He was fiercely loyal to his family and friends and never hesitated to offer encouragement, protection, or a helping hand.
He had an adventurous spirit and a youthful enthusiasm for life. Matt loved amusement parks, waterslides, skateboarding, snowboarding, shooting sports, professional wrestling, cheering on the Carolina Hurricanes, UNC basketball, Appalachian State and Florida State football, and, in his words, the Washington Redskins—never quite accepting their new name. He also had a deep love for animals, especially dogs, and shared an extraordinary bond with his beloved German Shepherd, Turbo, who was more than a pet—he was Matt’s constant companion and best friend.
Those who knew Matt will remember his infectious smile, his generous heart, his larger-than-life personality, and the way he made others feel supported and valued. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched—as a son, brother, trainer, mentor, teacher, teammate, and friend.
A Celebration of Life honoring Matt will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, North Carolina 27615. A reception will immediately follow at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Matt’s honor to the Wake County SPCA, reflecting his lifelong love for animals.
Matt’s life reminds us that true strength is measured not only by physical power but by kindness, loyalty, and the willingness to lift others up. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
