Bobby Sheppard
Bobby Sheppard, 82, of Raleigh, NC, went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 4, 2026.
Born January 16, 1944, in Rockingham, NC, Bobby grew up on Pee Dee Hill in Rockingham and attended Pee Dee Elementary and Richmond High School. Though he packed up a U-Haul and made Raleigh his home as a young adult, his ties to Rockingham always remained strong. He, along with his brother Jerry and their friends, was an enthusiastic supporter of the Richmond Raiders football team and loved attending games together. Bobby was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be remembered for his unwavering love for God, his country, and his family and friends, and for the lasting impact he made on the lives of everyone who knew him.
Bobby was an active and beloved member of his church family at Friendship Baptist Church. His faith was central to his life, and he cherished the friendships and fellowship he found within his church community. He shared the love of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ every chance he was given — if he knew you, he saw it as his duty and mission of love to share the gospel with you.
Bobby proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as a Sergeant, MOS 0311 (Rifleman), also trained as a Proof Technician in Small Arms. He served from December 1961 to April 1966 — four years and four months — stationed at Parris Island, South Carolina, and Quantico, Virginia, where he served at the Pentagon, with deployments to Cuba and a Mediterranean cruise, before being honorably discharged and transferring to the Marine Corps Reserve. He earned the Good Conduct Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal during his service. His time in the Marine Corps instilled in him the values of honor, courage, commitment, discipline, and loyalty — values he carried with him for the rest of his life, wearing that uniform, and his UPS uniform, as a badge of honor.
Following his military service, Bobby began his career with UPS in 1969, logging over 57 years and more than 5 million safe miles. For many of those years he drove to Alexandria, Virginia, four days a week. During his lunch break, he'd stop at a mile marker close to Greentop, a favorite sporting goods store in Ashland, Virginia, to walk for exercise and pass out gospel tracts while sharing his faith with everyone he met.
Outside of work and family, Bobby was, above all, a learner. He soaked up every ounce of knowledge he could about the things he loved — he was an avid gun enthusiast who enjoyed hunting and shooting and could talk your ear off about the smallest detail, and he was a devoted collector of American Indian artifacts, antiques, and history. Every Saturday you could find him at the flea market with his son Brandon, hunting for his next great $5 find, always eager to show it off afterward. He was a lifelong reader, and next to his Bible, his favorite books were Jim Corbett's Man-Eaters of Kumaon and the rest of the Jim Corbett Collection — he loved big cats, especially tigers and lions, and read those stories over and over. He loved a good breakfast most of all, and you could usually find him and his family gathered at Big Ed's, Denny's, Metro Diner, or one of the many other breakfast spots around Raleigh.
Those closest to him will remember his quick wit and his toughness — he was a man tough enough to have survived the Marine Corps and cancer, but who still chuckled every time his daughter Kelly called her dog “Gram” his “grandog,” and who easily melted from the love of his children and grandchildren. A rare quality worth noting: he was quick to apologize and explain why he thought a conversation went awry. He will be remembered for his strong opinions, his storytelling, his generosity, and his unwavering loyalty to everyone he loved.
Above all, Bobby loved his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Sheila Sheppard, who cared for him and prayed him through his cancer treatment with unwavering devotion; his children, Kelly Sheppard Shatat, Brandon Sheppard, and Lindsay Langdon; his stepchildren, Rob Southerland (Jocelyn) and Angie Cabe (Kenny); his grandchildren, Cruz Langdon, Haileigh Cabe, Jax Cabe, Luke Southerland, Ryan Southerland, Jack Southerland, and Mark Southerland; and his sisters-in-law, Gloria Jean Kelly Sheppard and Peggy Hatcher Turnage.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberly Sheppard; his parents, Cecil Sheppard and Jessie Tyson; and his siblings, Jerry Sheppard, James Turnage, Ted Turnage, Ida Mae Turnage Gibson, and Joyce Turnage Taylor.
Bobby leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, service, and friendship. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his memory will live on in the family and friends who loved him.

Kelly, I was so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. What I know for sure is that his legacy in you is incredible. I know how you love and I know this is beyond difficult for you and your family. I am grateful to your mother and father for the gift of you they gave the world. May the love you know and shared comfort you always. I am so deeply sorry for your loss of your dad, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers, as I now live in Wilmington. Shelia and Family I am so sorry to hear of Bobby's passing. I met Bobby at UPS back in 1976 while I worked in the package car area and then worked with him also in the Feeder department .Bobby was a good man with the biggest smile.
