Obituary For Angeline Hornyak

Angeline “Ange” Hornyak , 97, ascended to Heaven peacefully on September 25, 2016. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii on January 17, 1919 to Violet and Joseph Aguiar. Growing up on the Hawaiian Islands and graduating from President Theodore Roosevelt High School provided the foundation from which a great life would be lived. A Pearl Harbor survivor and subsequently an Army Signal Corp employee she was not only a witness of history but was an active participant in our wartime efforts. On January 14, 1943 she married Charles Hornyak, also a Pearl Harbor Survivor and WWII Veteran as a non-commissioned officer of Army Air Corp.

Married for 59 years, Ange was able to travel the world as a wife of career Air Force Veteran. During these travels, friendships were established that endured throughout their lives. They retired to the Florida West Coast where she was able to continue her love of the beach while enjoying a full life with her family, friends, and church.

One immense joy she had was hula dancing. Beginning early in life, she danced the hula that resulted in her teaching and performing for many years. As a believer of volunteering, she spent countless hours visiting nursing home residences and patients of the Bay Pines Veterans Administration Hospital. Ange was a truly amazing person and until the end, those who knew her were blessed by her kindness, sweetness and giving nature. She relocated to Raleigh to be close to family where the past 10 years was spent being active with friends, creating crafts and enjoying nature; especially the sunshine and warm breezes.

Her favorite bible verse was Numbers 6: 24-26 : ”May the Lord bless you and keep you; May the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace”

Ange was preceded in death by her parents, brother Arthur Aguiar and beloved husband Charles Hornyak. She is survived by her son, Charles Hornyak, daughter Darlene Ann Lee and daughter Donna Violet Leary and husband Martin Leary, granddaughter Deniell Hornyak, daughter in law Anne Leary and niece Susan Lyon.

The family would like to thank all who shared in Ange’s life. Specifically her dear friends Sue Talbot and Cherise Lynch. Them along with the family pets of Woodrow, Gus and Bonney; ensured her last years were full of love.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, considerations be given to the following organizations: Gigi’s Playhouse – Raleigh 2887 Jones Franklin Road Raleigh, NC 27606 www.gigisplayhouse.org (919) 307-3952

No one will be more missed than Mama Ange. From the first time I met her to the last time I saw her, she always had a big smile and a warm welcome. I loved hearing about her life in Hawaii and her adventures in Florida. The world seems a little colder without Mom and her warm generous heart. I leave my friends Donna an Martin with this poem I used for my dad's passing; may it give you comfort during this time. Love Denise and Duke Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die

Dwayne and I send our heartfelt sympathy to the entire family. There are so many wonderful memories of this special woman that I will hold forever. She truly felt like my "second Mom" and I am so grateful she was a special part of my life for so many years. She will always have a special place in my heart. She will be greatly missed but I find peace and comfort knowing she is with Charlie "cracking jokes." That makes my heart smile. You all are in our thoughts and prayers. With Love and Blessings, Darlene & Dwayne

My Grandma Ange was sweet and loving. One of my favorite memories is swimming together at her pool in Florida when I was a child. I loved sharing the joy of my Aunt Donna and Uncle Martin's wedding with her. I'm so grateful she shared her Pearl Harbor survival story last time we were together. I'm honored to call myself her Granddaughter. Aloha Grandma.

Dear Donna and Martin, Words cannot express how sorry I am for the loss of your Mom. She was one of a kind and there will never be another like her. She was such an interesting and engaging woman. She focused on the positives in life and always put out positive energy, even when i knew that the aches and pain of using a 97 year old body challenged her. If she complained, it was brief and then onto the fun stuff. Ange and I shared years of lunch, laughter, crafts, and conversation. Our friendship grew strong over the years. She taught me many things about what is important in life and stuff we should just let go of. She was my care receiver, but I feel as though I was the one who received the most for the years we shared. I will never forget Ange. Your Mom loved you and Martin so very much for making her part of your family, in your home. She always acknowledged how much you both did for her in so many ways and how lucky she was to be with you, and not alone somewhere, forgotten. I was blessed to have had the joy of her company for so long, and I will miss her always. Cherise Lynch

Dear Donna and Family, Please know we are all thinking about you while you grieve the loss of your mother. She really was a incredible person. I am glad my daughter got to meet her. Sending prayers to heal your hearts. Kathy McCay, Joe, Jackie, Ian and Haley The Rose Beyond The Wall A rose once grew where all could see, sheltered beside a garden wall, And as the days passed swiftly by, it spread its branches, straight and tall... One day, a beam of light shone through a crevice that had opened wide The rose bent gently toward its warmth then passed beyond to the other side Now, you who deeply feel its loss, be comforted - the rose blooms there- its beauty even greater now, nurtured by God's own loving care.

Donna & Martin She was a beautiful, special lady, and was blessed to have a wonderful daughter who loved her and took her into their home to allow her to enjoy the pleasures of life without worry as she grew older. I enjoyed listening to some of her stories and admired her for knowing how to hula dance. She enjoyed a fun full life and will be missed. The obituary was a beautiful tribute to her life. Love and prayers to you Donna & Martin. Gail and Don McBride
