Obituary For Ada Sanders

Ada Arlene Bohlander Sanders left her empty shell behind as she ascended to her heavenly home to be with her Lord. Born on July 8, 1936 in Pritchett, Colorado, Ada died peacefully at the Transition Hospice Home Thursday, February 9, 2017.

Ada was born the fourth of seven children to Chester Purdue and Freda Hoopes Bohlander. She was raised and schooled in Canon City, Colorado. In 1954, she enlisted in the US Air Force and was assigned to Eglin AFB where she met her future husband, Herman W. Sanders (Sandy). They were married and celebrated 61 years of wedded life last July. Ada joined Sandy wherever the Air Force military assignments led him, making a home in many places throughout the United States and Germany. After Sandy’s retirement from the Air Force in 1972, Ada moved the family to Raleigh where she would live the rest of her life. She was an employee and student at NC State University in the horticulture program. She nurtured her love of plants at home, and also by volunteering with the Master Gardeners.

Ada served as an active member of St. Paul’s Christian Church and the Priscilla Circle as long as her health allowed. She was beloved by her family and will be greatly missed.

Ada is survived by her husband, Herman (Sandy) Sanders, daughters Connie Kiser (Charles), Laurie Newell (Keith), and son, Greg Sanders (Stephanie). A daughter, Rachel Annette Sanders, preceded her in death. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Brian and Alan Kiser (Jennifer), Matthew (Amy) and Faith Newell, Eden, Gaston, and Grace Sanders. Five great-grandchildren include Maris, Jude, Adele, and Simon Newell, and Addyson Kiser.

Ada was preceded in death not only by her parents, but by siblings Vera Groeschel, Ray Bohlander, Fred Bohlander, and Jerry Bohlander. She is survived by a sister, Gladys Byerly, and a brother, Clarence Bohlander (Nancy), along with many precious nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to St. Paul’s Christian Church, 3331 N. Blue Ridge Rd., Raleigh, NC 27607.

Visitation will take place at St. Paul’s Christian Church, Saturday, February 18, 2017 from 10:00-11:00 a.m., in the church fellowship hall. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11:00. The Burial Service will take place at Historic Oakwood Cemetery.

What a beautiful, vibrant person "Arlene" (that's what we called Ada then) was. My husband and I knew Arlene and Sandy when we were stationed in the Air Force at Darmstadt Germany. We spent much family time together touring places like Heidelberg, a trip together down the Rhine. Arlene and I took a vacation together and went to Vienna Austria. We had a wonderful time. Times we will never forget. When we were stationed together at Goodfellow Air Force Base we spent family time together. We will never forget those great times and will cherish the memory of a beautiful lady Ada Arlene Sanders and her family. -Connie and Bill Chalfant, Easton, Kansas (retired USAF).

Mrs. Sanders was a woman of strength, beauty & faith. I can still hear her & Sandy laughing & teasing on the many occasions I was blessed to sit around the dinner table with the Sanders family. The food was always wonderful & she & Sandy always made me feel a part of their family. She planted that strength, beauty & faith in each of their children. Her legacy remains and lives will continue to be touched by her well lived life. My heart goes out to each member of the family during this time of remembrance & sorrow. Sending my prayers & love..
